Postnatal Services for you and your baby

Welcoming a baby is a life-changing experience — and your health matters just as much as your newborn’s. That’s why we offer postnatal care and postpartum support for mothers at every stage after childbirth.

Postnatal care — also known as postpartum care — is the essential support mothers receive after giving birth. It ensures safe physical recovery, emotional well-being, and expert guidance for newborn care and breastfeeding.

At our clinics, you’ll find both antenatal care and postnatal care designed to support your body, mind, and baby.

Common postnatal services questions

When should I start postnatal care?

It’s best to begin postnatal visits within the first six weeks after giving birth, or sooner if advised by your healthcare provider.

What happens during postnatal appointments?

Your doctor or midwife will check your healing, discuss emotional well-being, assess baby feeding and growth, and offer advice on family planning or contraception if needed.

How long does postpartum recovery take?

Physical recovery usually takes 6–12 weeks, but emotional adjustment can take longer. Every journey is different—there’s no “right” timeline.

How do I know if my postpartum emotions are normal?

Many new mothers feel a mix of joy, anxiety, and fatigue. If sadness or anxiety last for weeks, or you struggle to bond with your baby, talk to a healthcare provider. You’re not alone, and support is available.

Frequently asked questions

At FPAM, we are dedicated to addressing your inquiries and sharing insights about our comprehensive healthcare services.

What are available modern contraceptive methods?

There are currently four categories of modern contraceptive methods that the government of Malawi through Ministry of Health and World Health Organisation permits to issue to all people of reproductive age (10-25+ years). These are Short Acting Contraception like condoms, oral or pills, and injectables; Long Acting and Reversible Contraception like loop and implants; Permanent Contraception like vasectomy and bilateral tubal ligation; and Natural Contraception like beads method.

What is ideal age for contraception?

There is no specific age recommended to use contraception. Contraception is meant for all people of reproductive age (10-25+ years).

Can I use more than one family planning method?

YES! Dual protection from unintended pregnancy as well as venereal infections can be achieved by using other pregnancy prevention contraceptives combined with male and female condoms.

What is emergency contraception?

These are pills that are taken either before sex or after sex to avoid unintended pregnancy. The pills are supposed to be taken within 72 hours after sex. If fertilization has already taken place, the method does not work. These pills have upper help to girls and women who face sexual gender based violence.
